How to save time and be more productive with Evernote

Ever feel like you're not being productive? Feel like you just can't get through all the things you have to do? That's exactly how I feel like sometimes... until I found this.

The key to being productive is time management. (Did you get that?) It's so easy in our world of cyberspace to lose track of time, and to squander away valuable fragments of time while losing productivity. Not to mention the numerous distractions that beset us at every hand, especially while on the web. We live in a world stimulated by visual distractions... The key is to know how to prioritize and to decide what is most important to do.

I've always kept my to do lists and other lists in the Notes app on my Mac, which syncs to my iOS devices through my mail server (years ago) and most recently through iCloud. iCloud actually syncs everything very well, and without any real hitches. I'm satisfied with it, except for one thing... All of my notes are in the same iCloud account, which means they are in a never ending list in my Notes app... I accumulate all kinds of notes, from things I need to do, to financial records of money spent, to that quotation that I want to remember. The problem is that there's no way to organize it. Welcome to Evernote!

Two weeks ago I discovered this post, and I found a lot of clues of good time management. One of the things that this writer talks about is how to organize your day. You have to actually organize your day and decide what is most important to you to get done. This way you can decide what's most important before that interesting link in your email distracts you.

I started organizing my day with Evernote, and it's really helped me in accomplishing the goals of what I want to accomplish in a day. With a Desktop app, iOS app, and android apps, it really helps to have your todo list available on any of your devices. And everything syncs seamlessly in the background through your data connection.

Evernote has two different versions. One is a premium version for $5 per month, or $45 per year, which includes offline viewing and editing of your notebooks and lists as well as 1GB of new upload space per month... The other option they have is a basic free version that still supports through the cloud syncing, and a small amount of upload space every month. If you don't need offline access and a lot of upload space, you may not need the premium version at all. In any case you can start with the basic version and see if you like it, and if you need the perks of the premium, then you can get it. Five bucks per month isn't bad for something that can increase your productivity. And if you use the link above you'll get one free month of premium so you can check it out.

Any questions or thoughts, please leave them in the comments below. Thanks!

Fix the iPhone 1015 error without SHSH saved!

Have you ever had gotten the 1015 error on your iPhone when you tried to restore the operating system? I have a friend who gotten this error on his iPhone 3G when he tried to upgrade to 4.3. The iPhone basically became a brick, it would not boot past the Recovery screen. I'm going to tell you how I fixed it using the Mac platform, and how you can fix it also.

There was one youtube video that helped me in particular, but I can't find it now or I would credit it here. I want to give a special thanks to the iPhone dev-team for their untiring work in creating jailbreaks and unlock solutions as new devices and iOS versions come out. Also thanks to all the iOS users out there that write and make videos about their problems and fixes, it's a great help to the community. I found many resources online that helped me to figure out this fix.

From the research that I've done on this subject, I believe that if you get this 1015 error screen it's because the baseband has been upgraded to the iPad baseband 6.15, and so the reason that it gets stuck in recovery mode is because the iOS doesn't recognize the baseband. Upgrading the baseband is common procedure for unlockers. TinyUmbrella will help us with this. Also you do not need to have SHSH blobs saved for this fix as we will be taking advantage of the face that Apple is still signing for the 4.1 SHSH.

Any data that may be on the phone will be lost as we will be doing a complete restore to iOS 4.1. There are two reasons that we are restoring to the 4.1 firmware. The first is that Apple for some reason is still signing the SHSH blobs for this firmware release. But maybe you have blobs saved for a more recent version and you want to restore to that... That brings us to the second reason: TinyUmbrella (TU) is what we will be using to kick the device out of recovery, and to my knowledge TU is not able to kick out of recovery the newer versions of iOS4. Correct me in the comments if I'm wrong. I believe there may be other software now that may be able to kick out of recovery more recent versions of iOS4, but I have not tried them so we won't discuss them in this post. (Although your more than welcome to mention in the comments). I used this method for the iPhone 3G, although I believe it will work on other iDevices as well.

Here's what you need:

-Stock iOS 4.1 IPSW firmware for your model of iphone, Get it here.
-Latest version of iTunes
-Download TinyUmbrella for Mac OSX

The first step is to connect the iPhone by USB to the computer and open iTunes. Turn on the iPhone, as usual it will boot until it hits the recovery screen. iTunes should recognize it and give you the option to restore the firmware. Usually you would just click restore, and restore the firmware to the latest firmware. But since you're running a different baseband (most likely) you can't just restore to the latest firmware. So you want to option click on the restore button, and then a window should pop up asking what firmware you want to restore to. Navigate to the IPSW for your iPhone that you just downloaded, and then click 'Open'. Then it will go restore to the firmware. When it's finished it will give you the same 1015 error. Don't panic! This is to be expected. The firmware is still going crazy because your baseband hasn't changed. This is where TinyUmbrella comes to the rescue! Once you get the error, open up TinyUmbrella select the iPhone on the left, and then click 'Exit Recovery'. You should see a progress bar on the iPhone screen as it begins fixing it, and then the device reboots. Now it should boot into the emergency screen and you can activate the phone with a authorized SIM as normal. Congratulations on fixing your bricked iPhone!

If you have any questions or comments, or problems please put them in the comments.  Thanks for reading. God Bless.

Sync your notes between your Mac and iPhone/iTouch/iPad!

I have always used stickies on my computer, and when I got a iPhone I started using notes on it also. Then I thought how nice it would be if I could have notes on my iPhone sync automatically to my computer and vice versa. Then it could update the note immediately instead of waiting for me to connect the usb and do a sync of my phone.
This article shows how to sync notes in your iOS device with notes in Mac Mail through your email server.  The assumption is made that you have a email account already set up on both devices. With that let's get started!

On the iOS device:

Go to Setting/Mail, Contacts, Calendars/
Go to the email account that you want to use.
Turn the slider for notes to 'ON'

Now go to the notes App,
Tap on the Accounts arrow at the top left of the screen. Now you should see three things here. You should see 'All Notes', 'From My Mac' and the new account that you just added to notes.
Tap the new account and make a new note.

On the Mac computer:

Open up the Mail App.
Now there are two places the notes may show up to begin with. You may see them in the actual inbox, and you will also see them in a section down under the inboxes on the left side of the window under a heading called "Reminders". Normally I do not like to see my notes in my inbox, so a quick trip to preferences will fix that. Just go to Preferences (Shortcut is "⌘ + ," ) to Accounts Tab and to the account you have your notes in. Go to the Mailbox Behaviors pane and uncheck "Show notes in Inbox". Now they will only appear under Reminders.

If you have questions or comments feel free to post them in the comments.

Tech Gleaning

I have always loved learning about technical things. Whether it be Mac software, or whether it be electromagnetic waves. I've always loved learning new things in the scientific world. Often something will puzzle me or just get me to thinking, and I cannot rest until I find a solution. I always am one to google a problem, and to read forums and blogs, and everything I can find on a certain issue, but I haven't been one to contribute. So I got to thinking that I should contribute to the community, and what better way than using blogger? So expect to find tips concerning, media, video editing, just regular software, hardware, and technical tips on things that puzzle me in science.
